Global Studies

"Engaging students in service and academic learning at home and abroad, interdisciplinary, and housed in an environmentally-efficient building, Watkinson's Global Studies program embodies the school's mission to develop in students "the power to shape their lives and the world around them"

Meet Thy Neighbor was a dinner dialogue with local refugees. This event allowed us to here reggaes stories, and had the opportunity to have face to face conversations with them. They talked about the difficulties adjusting to the American culture, language was a difficulty that faced them all. Hearing their stories were moving and brought hope to other refugees trying to restart their lives in America.

The China Town Hall event focused on the importance of China's and the U.S relationship. At the beginning of the event some Watkinson students and orgainizers of the event discussed about some of the political cartoons based on the relationship between U.S and China. After discussing the political cartoons, we watched a live interview from former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. She discussed the relationship between the U.S and China.

Syrian Cooking Class:
Global Studies students were taught by Syrian Immigrant Yaman on how to make humus and tabouli. Yaman demonstrated her culinary skills by making these traditional Syrian foods. Global Studies students than broke up into to groups and took on different tasks to create these dishes. Yaman shared her experience arriving in the US as an immigrant. No one was there to help her adjust to the new culture, and she found it challenging dealing with the adjustment and caring for three children with minimal costs.

Global Studies annual NYC trip:
In December of 2018 the global studies juniors and seniors traveled to New York City. We toured The United Nations, The Tenement Museum and saw The Band's Visit on Broadway. My favorite part of the trip was going to The Tenement Museum. It is estimated that over 15,000 people lived in the building over a 20 year period.
